
Stopping the Lag in SACMI Rotary Systems
If you’re running SACMI rotary blow molders, you know the pace is relentless. When you’ve got thousands of PET preforms flying through every hour, every single second counts. The biggest headache? That annoying lag between flipping the switch and actually getting the heat you need. It’s a bottleneck that slows everything down. That’s why we built our infrared lamps the way we did. We wanted to kill that startup latency and keep the temperature rock-steady across the whole oven. Getting the heat right Here’s the secret: it’s all about the wattage-to-length ratio. We packed more power density into the quartz envelope so the filament hits its stride faster. It means your “warm-up” phase shrinks. You ramp up quickly, stop wasting energy while you wait for the machine to wake up, and—most importantly—you don’t end up with a pile of rejected bottles during the first run. The nitty-gritty stuff We use high-purity quartz glass because it lets the IR transmission through without any fuss. The filaments are tuned specifically for PET, so the material actually absorbs the heat instead of fighting it. As for the fit, we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just slide right in. No modifications, no headaches—just a direct swap for your OEM parts. One thing we noticed over the years: most lamps burn out early because of poor contact at the terminal. They expand and contract as they heat up and cool down, and eventually, they loosen. We spec’d our connectors to handle that movement so they stay tight, no matter how often you cycle them. A quick word of caution Now, pushing more wattage into a shorter tube makes the lamp respond faster, but it also means it runs hotter. You’ve got to make sure your airflow and cooling fans are actually doing their job. If the cooling is off, that “heat soak” will eventually eat your lamp sockets for breakfast. Also, do yourself a favor: check your reflector alignment every 500 hours. You want that heat hitting the preform, not bleeding back into the machine frame. It takes a few minutes, but it saves you a massive headache later.
