
Stop Your Infrared Heaters From Dying at the Connection
If you’ve ever had a workshop ceiling heater quit on you, chances are the failure happened at the connection point. It’s the weakest link. When these units are running full blast, those lead wires get hammered by constant heat cycles. In a lot of standard setups, there’s a tiny gap between the quartz tube and the wire insulation. It doesn’t look like much, but that’s exactly where the trouble starts.
What’s actually happening to the wires?
Think of it as a slow burn. Oxygen and moisture sneak into that gap, and if the heater is low-grade, the insulation starts to shrink or crack. Once that insulation pulls back, you’ve got bare wire sitting right in the “hot zone.” The surrounding materials start to carbonize, and before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit. We handle this by using OEM-grade sealing to plug that hole. We use a specific high-temp sealant and precision crimping to lock everything down. It stops the “breathing” effect—that annoying cycle of expanding and contracting—that usually rips the insulation away from the tube.
Why you can’t just “wing it” with the seal
Some people think they can just slap some silicone on the joint and call it a day. It doesn’t work. To do this right, the surface has to be surgically clean and oxide-free, and it needs to be cured at a very specific temperature. If that seal isn’t airtight, the halogen gas inside the tube can leak out, or gunk from the outside can seep in. Either way, your lamp’s lifespan takes a nosedive. Our way keeps the seal flexible enough to handle vibrations but tough enough to block oxidation. It keeps the electricity where it belongs, even when the tube is glowing white-hot.
A quick word of caution on installation
There is a trade-off here. Because the seal is so tight, the lead-in becomes more rigid. **Don’t bend these wires sharply right at the seal.**If you do, you’re putting way too much stress on the quartz. Just leave a bit of slack in your wiring loom. If you pull too hard on the leads while you’re installing them, you might crack the seal—and then you’re right back to square one with the aging problem.
