
Stop fighting the ceiling: A better way to heat factory changing rooms
If you’ve ever tried to heat a high-ceiling changing room with standard radiators, you know the frustration. You crank the heat, the air gets warm, and then—like clockwork—it all floats straight up to the ceiling. Meanwhile, your team is still standing there in the cold, shivering while they get ready for their shift. It’s a waste of money and a headache for everyone. The trick is to stop trying to heat the air entirely. Instead, we use shortwave infrared (IR) emitters. Here is why that actually works. Think about standing outside on a freezing winter day, but feeling the sun hit your face. You feel that warmth instantly, even if the air around you is ice cold. That’s exactly how IR heaters work. They send out waves of energy that go straight to the floor, the walls, and the people. No waiting for the room to “warm up.” The second a worker steps under the beam, they feel it. It’s fast. Really fast. But you can’t just throw these up anywhere. Since you’re dealing with high ceilings, you need a bit more punch—high-wattage units that can push the heat down to where people actually are. The placement is the tricky part. If you hang them too high, the heat loses its kick. Too low, and you’ve got “hot spots” that feel like standing too close to a campfire. We usually suggest a staggered grid. It spreads the warmth out so there aren’t any awkward cold patches. Now, there is a catch. IR heat travels in a straight line. It doesn’t “flow” or “blow” like air does. So, if a big locker or a wall is in the way, the area behind it stays cold. You have to plan your layout around the furniture. One last thing: don’t forget the upkeep. These things use quartz tubes, and if they get covered in factory dust, they can’t breathe. That dust acts like a blanket, trapping heat inside the tube until the glass stresses and cracks. A quick wipe-down once a month keeps them from burning out early. And for the love of your electric bill, hook them up to a motion sensor or a timer. There’s no point in heating an empty room.
