
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
When you’re picking out an infrared wall heater, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you go overboard, you’re just throwing money away on your electric bill and making the area right in front of the heater feel like a sauna. On the flip side, if you go too low, you’ll still be shivering in a damp room. It’s all about finding that sweet spot.
Finding Your Number
Think about the size of your space. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (something under 4m²), a 400W to 600W unit usually does the trick. For those mid-sized bathrooms—around 4m² to 8m²—you’re looking at 800W to 1200W. But if you’re dealing with a massive master bath (over 10m²), don’t just buy one giant 2000W beast. Trust me. You’re much better off putting up a few 600W units spread across different walls. It makes the warmth feel more natural and stops those annoying “hot spots” where one side of the room is roasting while the other is freezing.
Why Infrared Actually Works
Most heaters try to warm up the air, which is a losing battle in a bathroom. Between the steam and those cold, hard tiles, the heat just vanishes. That’s why we use shortwave infrared. Instead of fighting the air, these lamps send warmth directly to your skin and the walls. It’s instant. You feel it the second you flip the switch. And since bathrooms are tough on gear, we use quartz glass for the lamps—it can handle the constant jumping from ice-cold to piping hot without cracking.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Higher wattage means more intense heat, and your walls need to be able to handle that. If you’re mounting a powerful lamp on something like plastic or a thin composite panel, be careful. Those materials can warp. You’ll want a heat-resistant shield to keep things from getting messy. And please, don’t cut corners on the electrics. Put these on their own circuit with a switch rated for moisture. Most importantly, use a GFCI outlet. Water and high-voltage heat are a dangerous combo, and it’s just not worth the risk.
