
Getting Your Heat Right on Sidel SBO and KHS Blow Molders
Ever pull a PET bottle off the line and see that cloudy, pearlescent look? Or maybe the walls are thick in one spot and paper-thin in another. It’s frustrating. Usually, your first instinct is to mess with the oven settings. But here’s the thing: the problem often isn’t the settings at all. It’s the lamps. If the spectral output is off or the heat isn’t spreading evenly, no amount of tweaking the controls will fix it. The nitty-gritty on heat mapping When you’re looking for replacement lamps, you can’t just grab whatever’s on the shelf. These machines are picky. They need a very specific voltage and wattage to keep that heating curve steady. If you throw in a lamp with the wrong wattage, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll end up overheating the neck or leaving the base too cold. It’s all about short-wave infrared radiation. We play around with the filament density and the thickness of the quartz to make sure the heat actually sinks deep into the plastic. And they have to fit perfectly. Any gap in the heating zone is just a recipe for a bad bottle. Quartz and connectors (The stuff that actually lasts) We use high-purity quartz glass because, frankly, nobody wants to be climbing into a machine to replace a burnt-out bulb every two weeks. Then there are the connectors—usually R7s or Sk15. These aren’t just about “plug and play.” They’re built to handle a heavy current draw without pitting or oxidizing. Some of our lamps even have special coatings. This helps shift the emission spectrum so you don’t get those annoying “hot spots” when the lamp is sitting close to the preform. It just gives you a smoother, flatter heat profile from end to end. A few tips for installation Swapping these out is easy enough, but do yourself a favor:clean the contacts. If there’s oxidation on the sockets, you get resistance. That leads to localized overheating, and before you know it, you’ve fried a socket. One last thing. If you go with high-output lamps, you’re pumping more heat into the oven. That means your cooling fans have to pull their weight. If your vents are clogged with dust, the ambient temperature will spike and you might actually warp your plastic components. Check your airflow first. Then ramp up the power.
